former 10,000 Maniacs frontwoman. "I'm grateful for this period of retrospection . . . I tend to remember the events in my life and the people who have participated in them through the context of album cycles: writing, recording and performing. They're my little epochs."
The package includes a pair of tracks, "Sally Ann" and "Owensboro," from Merchant's most recent album, 2003's The House Carpenter's Daughter, released on her own Myth America label.

Natalie and Management Go Their Seperate Ways 21 November 2004
 | "AFTER MANY YEARS TOGETHER, this month we are parting company with both Bill Janovitz and Natalie Merchant. Reasons for these types of separations are often complex and difficult to articulate and never clearly understood by anybody including the principal participants. Nevertheless, we wish them both well in the future and are very very proud of our accomplishments together. I'm sure more information about contacting either of them will be available via their own websites at www.billjanovitz.com and www.nataliemerchant.com."

 | Questions are swirling around whether the election was conducted honestly or not. We need to know - was it or wasn't it?
If people were wrongly prevented from voting, or if legitimate votes were mis-counted or not counted at all, we need to know so the wrongdoers
can be held accountable, and so we can prevent this from happening again.
Members of Congress are demanding an investigation to answer this question. The decision on whether or not there will be an investigation could come as soon as Monday. PLEASE JOIN AND SUPPORT THE CALL FOR ONE NOW :

News from Natalies manager... 23 September 2004
 | 21 September 2004
Autumn Descends. What a summer it was. Here's a review of that and some words about what's coming.
NATALIE MERCHANT did a fabulous tour of America and a spectacular date at the Edmunton Folk Festival. Her tour featured benefit concerts for The Center for Constitutional Rights and for the Campaign for Old Growth Preservation.
Natalie played on Letterman the same night that Bill Clinton appeared. As much as I always wondered about Clinton while he was in office, I now look at him like he's Mother Theresa. He's clearly smart as a whip and gave me new hope that a President could speak in complete sentences and be two steps ahead of everybody else. It's only been four years since dumbo arrived and already I've forgotten that national leaders might have brains as well as power. I'm not telling you to go out and buy that huge book of Bill's but I would recommend catching the rerun of this episode of Letterman. It goes without saying that Natalie was also superb and her rendition of Sally Ann from The House Carpenter's Daughter was fantastic.
For the moment, it seems that Natalie is going to be working on a new batch of songs. She's not telling me when she'll start recording but it does seem like she's got a plan. I think she'll also be recording with other people, as well, on projects that might not be, how shall we say, mainstream. I'm very excited.

Natalie to perform at MoveOn Gala in NYC 24 August 2004
 | Tonight, MoveOn PAC will host a star-studded, sold out, gala called "10 Weeks: Don't Get Mad, Get Even!" to kick-off 10 Weeks of grassroots activism, highlighted by a new TV ad campaign featuring the work of notable American film directors and actors including Matt Damon, Scarlett Johanssen, Kevin Bacon, Al Franken and Rebecca Romijn, Rob Reiner and Richard Linklater. The new ads are part of MoveOn PAC's multi-million TV ad program, between now and the November election.
MoveOnPAC's executive director Eli Pariser says the goal of these ads is to better connect with voters and inspire political activity in a more entertaining and creative way. "These ads from well-known directors and actors will validate the concerns many Americans feel about the President's failures at home and abroad." Pariser added, "Using humor and creativity, we believe they'll speak to a much broader audience than the same old Washington consultant-driven advertisements do."
During each of the next ten weeks, Moveon PAC will announce a new grassroots initiative in its campaign to elect John Kerry.
Beginning Friday, one ad a week will be available at www.MoveOnPAC.org. The first activity will be launched with an ad called Register and Vote, written and directed by award-winning hip-hop icon Benny Boom. It will inaugurate Moveon PAC's effort to counter Republican voter suppression efforts like those underway in Florida now.
The 10 Weeks campaign embodies Moveon PAC's continuing effort to combine grassroots activism with celebrity participation in supporting John Kerry's campaign for President.
"This campaign isn't just about celebrities showing up at an event for a photo-op. It's about artists being active as American citizens and using their voices in creative ways to express what many people are feeling," said Laura Dawn, executive producer of the campaign and the Event & Cultural Director for MoveOnPAC.
Entertainment at the event will include musical performances by The Roots, Moby, Natalie Merchant and Perry Farrell, appearances by Howard Dean, Al Franken, MoveOn PAC Executive Director Eli Pariser, Kevin Bacon, Richard Linklater and
many others. Janeane Garofalo will host.
"I wanted to get involved because it's necessary. Young people, especially minorities, need to see the value in registering and voting," said Benny Boom, Hip-Hop icon who wrote and directed Register and Vote for MoveOnPAC's "10 Weeks" campaign.

Meanwhile, The House Carpenter's Daughter has exceded our expectations of what a truly independent release can do in America. We've mentioned here in the past that THCD is recorded, manufactured, and distributed in the USA without a conventional label or distribution system. Natalie's audience has proven its loyalty by coming out in droves to purchase the album at stores or by buying it through Natalie's website at www.nataliemerchant.com.
By now most people who think about such things know that Natalie had a beautiful baby girl who is now approaching a year old. There are not yet plans for another CD release but we'll keep you posted if there are.

News on THCD marketing 5 January 2004
 | c/o FortApache (Natalies managment):
Natalie Merchant's new CD, The House Carpenter's Daughter, was released in mid September and is being very well received across the land. In a novel sales approach we have released this CD on Natalie's own label, Myth America Records. Many stores are carrying the CD including hundreds of fine independent stores as well as most locations of Borders, Barnes and Nobel, Tower, and Virgin record stores. For shut-ins those of you who prefer to shop online, you can purchase the CD from Natalie's website at www.nataliemerchant.com.
We're using a novel business model for the distribution of this record and, in perhaps the first example on so large a scale, Myth America is shipping records directly to stores without the aid of a national distributor or other label assistance. I cannot underscore enough how enjoyable this process is and we've gotten to know an entire population of wonderful folks who work in retail. If you do work at a record store and would like to carry this wonderful new CD, please drop us a line at fortapache@fortapache.net.

New article from Reuters 2 November 2003
 | Merchant's Custom-Built 'House'
By Wes Orshoski
NEW YORK (Billboard) - Natalie Merchant giggles while recalling the low expectations she and her former bandmates in 10,000 Maniacs had for their debut release.
"It sold more copies than there were people in our hometown. And we were so impressed by that," she recalls.
Twenty years and some 14 million records later, Merchant had similarly low expectations for her new album, "The House Carpenter's Daughter."

News on Natalies baby girl! 20 October 2003
 | This comment is c/o Gary Smith - manager of Natalies label "Myth America". Enjoy!
"OK, I can now confirm that Natalie's baby is unusually cool. I got to spend some time this past weekend and have to say, yep, sure enough, that baby's exemplary. Not only is she darned cute, she's also perhaps the most serene baby I've ever met. Many babies have other things to recommend them and I mean no disrespect to any of the babies I have known and loved. But Lucia wins the most serene baby award, by a mile."

Gabriel Gordons new CD out now! 18 October 2003
 | Natalies guitarist and background singer, Gabriel Gordon, has recently released his third solo album called "Gypsy Living". Unfortunately it seems like it isnt available at any of the international mail order places/stores, yet.

Natalie Sighting With The Baby! 27 September 2003
 | I live in NYC and take the subway to work (N/W train) around 5:30pm-ish. I was reading a book when a couple walked into the train. The man was holding a small baby and the woman was pushing the stroller. Since it was rush hour, the seats were limited so the man w/ the baby decided to sit down while the woman remained standing and leaned against a pole in the middle of the subway car. She was pushing down the breaks on the stroller but was having a bit of trouble with it so I looked up at her. It was Natalie! But I couldn't believe that she was riding the subway so I doubted myself. I looked at the baby (who was soo small and adorable) since everyone else seemed to be eyeing the baby too (one guy even asked how old the baby was - no one in NY even talks to others on the subway!). I looked at the baby and then back at mom. "It can't be Natalie Merchant riding the subway," I thought. Then a guy came up to her and said, "Hi Natalie! I'm so-and-so from so-and-so Magazine (I can't remember what he said) and I was supposed to do an interview with you." She said hello and gave an explanation of how busy she has been lately with the baby. By this time, it was my stop and I had to leave. I was going to say something to her but I was so starstruck...and felt kinda embarrassed that I didn't offer a seat.
I couldn't believe it! She looks beautiful and healthy and just great. The baby looks so precious. Congratulations to mom, dad, and baby!
Thanks to ActionJoJo for posting this for all of us.

Further Album Release Update 10 July 2003
 | please find below an email from Gary Smith, Natalie Merchant's manager, where he outlines the release plans for Natalie's new album, The Carpenters Daughter, and explains the reasons for the delay.
Mark.
Thanks for your email. Getting Natalie's new CD to the pressing plant has
been a more complicated task than was originally presumed, in part because
of complications surrounding the lovely package she's chosen and designed.
Our intention is now this:
1. The pre-order store will open in a couple days, maybe Friday, maybe
Monday. This will allow people to order the CDs and be the first to receive
them on, I believe, August 12.
2. The pre-order store will close on August 8th and the main online store
at www.nataliemerchant.com will then feature the CD for sale. The CD will
be for sale exclusively through www.nataliemerchant.com for one month and
will be shipped on a order by order basis to people who buy it through
natalie's site.
3. if all goes as planned, will arrive in stores on September 16th for sale
to the general public.

Hi cliff.

complicated than even we'd imagined. our hope is that the CD will be available for
preorder within two weeks and that it will be available on natalie's website for a month
after that and finally, by mid-september, it'll be in the stores.
we'll keep you posted. but feel free to write in with questions.
regards,
gary smith
ps: sorry for the delay. honestly.

THCD Review in Rolling Stone magazine 1 July 2003
 | A review of "The House Carpenters Daughter", can be found in the Rolling Stone magazine.
Natalie Merchant The House Carpenter's
Daughter (Myth America)
Really, it's a good thing more than twenty years after she debuted as 10,000 Maniacs' frontwoman,
Natalie Merchant still loves the sound of her own voice, that grainy alto redolent of countless Marlboros she never smoked. She still doesn't exhibit much of a sense of humor; she often seems
on the brink of delivering a stern lecture. Yet Merchant has frequently managed to turn her intensity into expressive and engaging music. With this self-released eleven-song disc, portentously subtitled A Collection of Traditional and Contemporary Folk Music, you fear the worst; instead, The House Carpenter's Daughter is just more happy proof of Merchant's inimitable manner. From "Sally Ann", which she sings up-close and personal, establishing her famous moodiness, and "Which Side Are You On?" where she belts like some veteran mountain singer, Merchant casts new and old spells. Erm, Sorry! 19 June 2003
 | Ok, I goofed... I put up an MP3 file of Heather Nova, saying it was Natalie on backing vocals... Turns out I was wrong, the person singing backing vocals (rather beautifully) was Sarah McLachlan. Oops...
OK, I've taken the track down now... Sorry for any confusion...
To those of you that sent polite messages indicating the error of my ways, thanks. To those that sent snotty smerky emails questioning my committment to Miss Merchant ("Anybody that was a fan of Natalie Merchant would know..."): WELL EXCUUUUUUSE ME

 Crayola backpack 22 March 2003
 | A special edition "Crayola backpack", which contains a 4 track special edition CD and a coloring book designed by Natalie (as well as several crayons and paper), was released in november and can be found at Walmarts.
The backpack is purple in color, and has an orange label on the front. In the middle of the label it says "Natalie Merchant", and shows pictures of the CD (similar to the Motherland cover, this time full color though) and the coloring book. Retail price is about $8-$9.
If you are trying to locate the backpack, please search carefully. It has been reported that they are a bit hard to find.
Let the Walmart employee do a search for this barcode : (0) 71662 12181 (5).
Dont let ruthless and greedy (Ebay) sellers rip you off...!

Natalie Hits Another Compilation Album! 26 January 2003
 | Various Artists
E-town live volume 3, E-Town Records
When it comes to radio show CD compilations, you can't blame producers for including big hits by big stars because they sell more units that way.
The freshly released e-town live volume 3 takes the braver approach of collecting lesser-known songs by the best known musicians who have performed on the show and including gems from virtual unknowns. Instead of You've Got A Friend in Me, Randy Newman is represented by World Isn't Fair, a musing on Marxism and modern families. Hot songwriter David Gray sings a poignant, unrecorded tune, Twilight, and Natalie Merchant softly croons Break Your Heart.
The elderly members of the Blind Boys of Alabama deliver a near-rap rendition of the gospel stirrer Run On For A Long Time and the late Pops Staples injects a measure of soul into Bob Dylan's Gotta Serve Somebody.
While the world probably didn't need another recording of Midnight Oil's Beds Are Burning and Shelby Lynne's Thought It Would Be Easier, it's a better place for the thoughtful lyrics in Tim Easton's Carry Me and More by the eclectic Jules Shear. For our money, it's worth buying this CD just to hear Susan Tedeschi rip into the Bonnie Bramlett chestnut (Mama) He Treats Your Daughter Mean and the late Rick Danko with Garth Hudson evoke the Band at its best on Book Faded Brown.
E-town is a music and spoken-word program recorded primarily in Boulder and heard internationally on more than 150 stations.
Mark Brown, John Lehndorff
