Merchant among nominees for NY state arts council 06 28 2007
 | Associated Press - June 20, 2007 5:25 PM ET
ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Singer Natalie Merchant is among five people nominated today for spots on the State Council on the Arts by Governor Spitzer.
Spitzer said his nominees are expected to help transform the state Arts Council. He said a more "diverse and daring board" will build the state's reputation as a center of artistic creativity and expression.
Spitzer appointed Heather Hitchens executive director of the council. She is president of Meet the Composer Incorporated and was executive director and development director for the Delaware Symphony Orchestra.
Hitchens will be paid an annual salary of $135,000. Board members are not paid.
The council promotes the arts and culture in the state, in part through a program of grants to non-profit organizations.
